Are you a Virtuous Human Being?

I have been wanting to write about being a virtuous woman since Sunday, but writers block kicked in. And honestly that’s something I never get because writing to me is just about thoughts and I always have thoughts. My thoughts have thoughts.

An epiphany occurred, that my post shouldn’t be gender specific. It should focus on being virtuous as an overall human being.

Virtuous is defined as having or showing high moral standards. That’s pretty simple definition, but some people just don’t have basic moral standards. Now what’s morally right to me, may be not morally right to you. And for that reason, there is completely no judgement here.

According to Aristotle

Virtue means doing the right thing, in relation to the right person, at the right time, to the right extent, in the right manner. Thus, to give money away is quite a simple task, but for the act to be virtuous, the donor must give to the right person for the right purpose, in the right amount, in the right manner at the right time.

When I researched and found this quote,I thought of so many situations, examples, and circumstances. Keep in mind just because you are a righteous/ virtuous person you are subject to fault, none of us are God. We all fall short, some shorter than others but hey what can I say.

I totally agree with the quote. I am by no means any philosopher, However, as I dissected the quote, as it’s all about doing whats right. One of my favorite sayings is:

You can never go wrong, doing what’s right ~LaShawn Uchenna Ani

When we think of doing the RIGHT THING, one basic standard of life is treat people how you would want to be treated. Do onto others as you would want them to do unto you. One example, I will use is when you are dating someone, whether it’s a serious relationship or you are married, treat the person as if you would treat your mother, daughter, aunt, sister, cousin, or grandmother and vice verse.

Doing the RIGHT THING in regards to the RIGHT PERSON. Now he’s getting deep here, the right person. How many times can you say you have done the right thing in regards to the wrong person. I have many times, that’s because I didn’t acquire discernment until later in life. Once you acquire discernment, you will never do the right thing for the wrong person again.

Doing the RIGHT THING in regards to the RIGHT PERSON at the RIGHT TIME. Timing is critical part of life. Have you ever met the right person at the wrong time. And have you ever met the wrong person at the right time for you. However, you should always trust the timing in your life.

Doing the RIGHT THING in regards to the RIGHT PERSON at the RIGHT TIME, to the RIGHT EXTENT. Right extent meaning how far you will go. Sometimes people go over and beyond for the wrong person, again I’m guilty. I only speak on things I have gone through or do. So sometimes we go to far for the wrong person, and sometimes we go to far for the right person. It’s always important to set boundaries and know limits.

Doing the RIGHT THING in regards to the RIGHT PERSON at the RIGHT TIME, to the RIGHT EXTENT, in the RIGHT MANNER. I believe almost everyone has good intentions. Sometimes the intentions may come off wrong. So we can do the right thing, for right person, at the right time, to the right extent in the wrong manner. Again, I’m guilty. I will do anything for my daughter but sometimes, the manner in regards to how I do it may be wrong. It’s not wrong to me, but if someone takes offense, then it’s wrong. You have to accept that everyone feelings are valid, and they are their own.

The example Aristotle used in regard to being virtuous was that of giving or loaning money to someone which I believe is genius. Because if you have never gave or loaned money to anyone you are not virtuous human being, you are selfish. DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER! I believe he was using something most virtuous people can relate to.

How often do you see people on the street with a sign, you drive past and you don’t give $1. I have, but I never forgot a sermon one Sunday at church where my Pastor said what’s giving somebody $1 to $5. Ask yourself is that going to hurt your pockets. Every since then if I have cash I give to anyone with a sign, because it’s not hurting me at all.

Its always important to give and do what’s in your in heart.

When you think if you are a virtuous human being, ask yourself are you doing what’s right, according to Aristotle quote.

I learned a lot from the quote. What did you get from the quote comment below. I would love to hear your thoughts.

  1. Great post! When many “religious” people hear virtuous they associate it to being a virtuous woman. I love the quote “You can never go wrong doing the right thing”. As humans, we need to learn to do right by helping those in need. Beautiful write-up.
