Black Eye Peas Bring Good Luck For the New Year! Have you eaten them today?

Whether you believe in superstitions or not? It’s always interesting to see how people participate in all the fun. One of the most popular superstitions in the Southern United States is eating black eye peas on New Years Day.

According to, The origin of black eye peas as good luck goes as far back as the American civil War. During this time, Southerners considered themselves lucky to be left with supplies to help them survive the winter, and black-eyed peas evolved into a representation of good luck.

In another Southern tradition, black-eyed peas were a symbol of emancipation for African-Americans who had previously been enslaved, and who after the Civil War were officially freed on New Years Day.

Growing up, my mother would always prepare her black eyed peas with stewed tomatoes. To continue on with the tradition, every year I prepare my black eye peas as a traditional meal. I prepare them in the slow cooker over night with lots of seasoning, so they can be hot and ready for New Years Day.

Eating black eye peas on New Years Day is supposed to bring prosperity and good luck.

There are several ways that you can pair your peas.

  • You can eat your black eye peas alone which has a mythical power to bring good luck.
  • If you prepare your peas with collard greens, the collard greens symbolizes money. It ensures you financial prosperity in the new year.
  • If you prepare your peas with cornbread, the cornbread symbolizes gold.
  • The combination of peas and stewed tomatoes symbolizes wealth and health.

You can eat any combination that you wish, as long as you get your black eye peas in on New Years Day.

Try this recipe known as the New Years Hoppin John, you can always modify according to taste:

  • 1 pound bag of black-eyed peas, soaked overnight and rinsed
  • 1 cup red onion, chopped
  • 1 cup green onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1/2 cup red bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 jalapenos, deseeded, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon chopped garlic
  • 3 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 2 smoked turkey legs , skin removed ( if vegetarian omit this item)
  • 1 quart low-sodium chicken stock or vegetable stock
  • Salt, black pepper and cayenne to taste
  • 4 cups freshly steamed white rice

Heat the olive oil over medium heat in large pan.

Saute the onion, bell pepper, jalapenos and garlic, and cook until opaque and lightly browned, about 8 minutes.

Add the turkey legs (omit if vegetarian), black eye peas, chicken or vegetable stock, band a teaspoon of salt in slow cooker.

Cook low heat overnight 8 hours or until peas are creamy and turkey leg is tender. If the liquid evaporates, add more stock or water. Adjust seasonings, and garnish with green onions.

Serve hot over rice.
